This Week Under The Book Shepherd’s Roof

Hello and Good Publishing Day to YOU …
The 4th is around the corner. Wishing you a Happy 4th of July … and reflection. It’s a time to be thankful for … you are breathing. You have friends and family in your midst. We will be on the back deck … I’m not able to do steps and the like, so no family BBQ … unless they decide to shift here. We don’t have the view for fireworks … yet I suspect that they aren’t wise this year, at least in my neck of the woods. The fire hazard is just to great.

On the home front, I’m looking forward to the rebuilding of the back deck rails this coming week—it will be a makeover for sure. Materials are arriving daily—the goal is to thwart the hail gods forward so that we don’t have to do this yearly.

And a surprise, my fave trees, the purple robe locust decided to do a last hoorah and pop out a few more blooms. So thrilled me to see the sudden burst in my spot on the deck.

Yesterday was to be taken out the stitches day … alas, not to be. A few came out, but the rest get another week—there is still inflammation, not full closing after two weeks … so, antibiotics starting up and daughter Shelley is taking overall charge of all wound care. Such is life.

And … I’ve graduated from Scooter Girl to Rover Scooter Girl! Friends brought over a super, duper scooter to sub for the one I was using—much steadier to get me around. No attempt for walking until mid-August and that will be with crutches for another month.

Onward …

Have you ever explored the network website where I store all my podcasts? Over 200,000 authors download episodes during May. In June … will June was nuts! One day, over 65,000 downloads. As the last day of June closed out, I checked one more time … Holy Moly … over 700,000 downloads of various podcasts over the month … 748,788! That’s a wowsa for sure! This week, Sandra Beck joins me for a fast hour on Author Website Makeovers for Influence. Lots of excellent tips on marketing on the AuthorU-Your Guide to Book Publishing podcast. Join me.

You can select which podcast is for you from over 350 shows … the latest will always be posted on top of the show page: http://bit.ly/BookPublishingPodcast--it goes directly to the Show Page, where you can view all podcasts at once—just scroll … you’ve got a lot to pick from to expand your learning and how to curve.

Add these to your calendar now. Details will all be posted under the Events tab on the website.

Is there a Workbook in your midst? Have you thought about taking your sage advice within the covers of your books and creating a WORKBOOK? One that you can sell as a new product?

Why not create one … or several?

June’s webinar was all about the “how to” for Workbooks. Lots of tips and strategies. It’s ideal for the established author, coach … anyone who has advice that can be turned into a new product … and did you know that WORKBOOKs sell for more per unit than a book? Now you do.

For Nonfiction authors (and authors-to-be) … the new theme for books is that short is the new black … the business reader wants shorter books—books that can be read on a short plane ride, within two hours.
How does an author achieve this feat? Start by brutally cutting words … get ready to cut your book in half. With Judith as your guide and mentor, your mission is doable.
Questions to ask yourself include:

· Could your book be a series?

· What are the must-have elements?

·  Did you include any “filler” material in an already published book?

·  Is there anything within a current book that is more ego-driven than essential content?

· What parts are vital to your topic, work, and vision?

· Are you able to let go and dump (or save for the next book)?
“Yikes,” you are thinking. “This is an impossible task!” “Not so,” says Judith, “it’s actually fun and eye-opening. Is it work? Yes. Does it pay off? Yes again.”

Eliminate the Superfluous Parts and Create the Best Book You Can for Your Buyer

Your books are BUSINESS. There isn’t a book out that doesn’t have some fluff—filler material that is nice to have, yet not crucial to the storyline, your expertise or solution to the underlying theme of your book. With short being the new black, brutal becomes part of your vocabulary. Brutal. The word cutting room is at your fingertips. To be successful, you’ve got to be willing and able to cut.

What you’ll have when you’re finished is a far better product than that gangly, over-wordy to me you started with. Trust me. It might just have the makings of a bestseller!

Are you ready … Judith will give you “pre-work” to start the gathering process? We will meet in Denver area at a local restaurant.

Your Commitment? 4 consecutive Wednesdays from 3.00 to 5.30 p.m. Mountain time  – all sessions will be recorded if you need to miss one.
Where: Your Computer — we do it on ZOOM — You get a link to join in.
Your Cost? only $297 per person

Questions of the Week:

Question: How do I get over writer’s block?

Answer: One word: write. Just write and keeping writing. It doesn’t how “bad” you deem your writing to be … just write. Yes, take a walk; watch a movie; even twiddle your thumbs on the back deck. You are thinking … and an idea will bubble up that gets your revved up. But, it’s all about writing. One word at a time.
