Hello and Good Publishing Day to YOU.

I love the evolving of the summer garden. The veggies yield daily adds to our table—and we share with our neighbors. The snow peas add a wonderful crunch to salads and one of my fav side dish casserole—whatever squashes are ready, chopped onion, bacon, garlic and cheeses baked all together. Delicious!  The squashes, peppers, and snow peas are prospering.

Sunday, from my upper deck, I enjoyed the view of the new clementis planted in the spring. It has climbed the lattice holding the finch feeder that my favorite little birds nibble on throughout the day and delivering its first crop of colorful blooms.

So much happening with the Colorado Authors Hall of Fame. The Awards have been ordered—they are gorgeous! The After Party light supper is planned … and it will be at the Colorado Blvd Hilton Garden Inn post the Induction ceremony. Awesome author and #1 AM radio host Dom Testa will emcee the event. Guests and Inductees with interviewed on the Red Carpet. The website is updated and tickets can be obtained through it.

This is the place to be with authors who have sold millions of copies of their books. To celebrate their words; to gather bits of their wisdom as those in attendance will share and delight you. The awesome gift that Inductee John Fielder is giving to all attending is worth far more than the price of admission.

All I can say is: if you are in Colorado, don’t miss this. We know that many are flying in just to attend.

Author Tools – Discover your best writing software
Below is a Bakers Dozen of the best book writing software programs. MANY are free ... a few have a fee. Some are SIMPLE … others, complicated.

  1. Microsoft Word – Word Processor, $79.99 (it may have come loaded free with your PC)
  2. Scrivener – Word Processor, $45
  3. Pages – Word Processor, $28
     4. Freedom – Productivity Software, $2.42/month
  1. Google Docs – Online Word Processor, Free
  2. Evernote – Note-Taking Software, Free
  3. FocusWriter – Word Processor, Free
  4. FastPencil – Word Processor, Free
  5. yWriter – Word Processor, Free
  6. Hemingway App – Style & Grammar Checker, Free
  7. Dropbox – Document sharing platform, Free
  8. Open Office – Word Processor, Free
  9. Grammarly – Editing Software, Free

My two bits … I’m a Microsoft Word person. It’s improved over the years and for me, is simple and the no-brainer of the lot. Grammarly and Hemingway App are excellent tools to use AFTER you have created a chapter—checking on punctuation, editing, use of adverbs, reading level, etc. Some think that Google Docs is the cat’s meow—I’ve had hiccups with it and reverted to Microsoft Word for all my nonfiction writing and working with my Book Shepherd clients. For fiction writers, they live and breathe with Scrivener, others don’t.

What’s important is to find what works best for you. Learn it, stick with it, and soar.

The Book Marketing Unplugged is Coming … Early Bird Rates Up NOW … and don’t miss this!

Question: When should authors start marketing their books?
Answer: The day they start writing it.

Okay … so must authors don’t get a "pass" on this question. So, let’s reframe the question:

Question: When should authors start marketing their books?
Answer: NOW.

When your car begins to make an awful noise and just stops, you know you have a problem … right?

When your basement is flooded; when you noticed that there are watermarks on your ceiling; ,r that water is seeping through your window edges, you have a problem … right?

When your computer goes blank and doesn’t respond, you know you have a problem … right?

BUT … what about marketing your book? Do you have a problem? YOU DO, if you have ANY of these symptoms:

· There are people who would benefit from your book, and you aren’t connecting with them.

·  There are people who are interested in your topic or your genre and you haven’t reached out via social media to connect.

· There are people within social media that are interested in your topic and who aren’t engaging with you.

· There is a change you are focusing on that relates to the premise of your book … and others "don’t get it."

·  You are having difficulty persuading book buyers or your target market to buy your book.

· Your ideal/target market doesn’t connect with your reasoning, rationale, solutions, or storyline within your book.

· Your social media and email contacts are less than 1,000.

· You have engaged the "BB" gun approach to marketing—just aim anywhere; push it out to anyone at any time.

Do any of the above sounds like you? If yes, you have a marketing problem.

If that is you, then how much time are you spending working on a marketing solution? What are you investing in your time, energy and money to learn and create a plan that works? Savvy authors have learned that you cannot solve your marketing problem the next day by simply repeating what you did yesterday, last week, last month … or certainly, last year.

Solution: Attend and participate in the first annual The Book Shepherd’s Book Marketing Unplugged. Successful authors have learned and practice: if my book marketing success is to be … it’s up to me. Join Judith Briles for Book Marketing Unplugged this fall. It’s a two-day intensive with just Judith. And YES, there will be hot seats for each participant.

Date: October 18-19

Questions of the Week:

Question: Is there a way to add my book covers to my email signature?

Answer: Sure, there is. In fact, my Book Shepherd blog published August 6th has a step-by-step how-to for you. It’s an ongoing way to add to your expertise plus including the necessary contact information for you so a receiver doesn’t have to go hunting. Within the eMail platform you use, there will be a "signature" option. Think about what you want others to "instantly" know about you—which social media platforms do you want them to connect to? What about a picture of you and/or the latest book? Include your tag line or slogan. Announce a new book to come. Make sure you include your eMail and website. I also include my phone number. What else? It’s up to you.
