This Week Under The Book Shepherd’s Roof

Hello and Good Publishing Day to YOU …

I always mourn when I finally throw in the gardening towel and remove or drastically cut back a tree. Two weeks ago, two were removed from my side yard. This week, six will be dramatically cut back in the back area. In their nakedness, I will sprinkle a few shepherd hooks with baskets of flowers to soothe my eyes until we can determine if the six can find new life. Sigh.

To relieve the tree bummer, I decided to get John out of the house. He’s been within the walls and back deck since February. Our wine cellar hasn’t been added to since last fall. With masks, we headed to first to Trader Joe’s with a mission to do a restocking on three bucks Chuck, then to Total Wine, a new store neither of us had been to. I did the run into Trader Joe’s, knowing what I was looking for. John was safe in the car. Within 15 minutes, I emerged with seven cases. Next stop, he was going to go in with me for a “look-see”. A beautiful, huge store—it was the Chilean and Australian wines plus a few higher-end reds I was after.

Not being a wine drinker since 2006 after an accident that altered my taste buds, wines are offered to guests within gatherings and entertaining plus John loves a glass with dinner. I digress. The result is that the wine cellar is now full once again and we should be good for the rest of 2020.

Thanks to neighbor Dan who helped carry a dozen cases downstairs—he selected a bottle of his choice and headed to a Memorial Day Fish Fry. John and I did our own fish BBQ—a delicious wild halibut and salad. In chatting with friends in AZ who texted me—why weren’t we invited? They will be here in July … on the menu with a Caesar salad. Life goes on!

This is the final week of How to Write a Book in 4 Weeks Online with 9 awesome authors. Chapters are being revealed … we have new authors in our midst! So much fun to see what flows from the minds and hands.

Do you need a goose to remind you about something you need to do with your writing? Then, discover DRAFT. It’s an online word processor that not only keeps track of how many words you write per day, it will email you reminders about your daily word count goals. Now, if the reminder bugs you, you can turn the function off. It’s similar to Google Docs: allowing you to track changes, collaborate via suggested edits, and make comments on the doc. https://draftin.com/
Of course, Microsoft Word is a writing tool. Typically, a version comes with a PC when purchased … or you may have invested in an upgraded version separately. Here’s another: LIBREOFFICE, an open source answer for those who want to try Microsoft without paying the price tag. Plus, it’s compatible with all of the regular file types people are used to, such as .doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx, .ppt, and .pptx files. Kinda cool. https://www.libreoffice.org/

Questions of the Week:

Question: Should I publish the paperback with the hardback of my book?

Answer: In a word: NO. I say this because the paper version will be much less in retail pricing than the hardback is. You will end up undercutting your hardback sales. Is that what you want to do? And, if you release the paper 6 months to a year later, it gives you the opportunity to do another book launch. New York typically holds back a paper version and leads with the hardback if there is to be one. I would mirror their strategy.
