Dom Testa

Dom is also a well-known, award-winning author of both fiction and non-fiction who writes within multiple genres. Among his sixteen published books are the Galahad Series of young adult books (Tor/Macmillan), which won the International Grand Prize from Writer’s Digest and claimed a Top Shelf selection from The American Library Association.

His Mindbender Books have reached #1 on The Denver Post’s bestseller list, and the Color of Your Dreams was written for anyone who has longed to see their name on a book cover and his new Eric Swan spy thriller series debuts in 2020.

Books of note: Arms Race: Eric Swam Thriller #6 (Eric Swan Thrillers), The Mindbender Book, Volume 4, The Color of Your Dreams: Publish Your Damn Book Already

Robert Heinlein
July 7, 1907 – May 8, 1988

Calling Colorado Springs home in 1949, Robert Heinlein’s personally designed house was featured in Popular Mechanics. Often called the "dean of science fiction writers," he was among the first to emphasize scientific accuracy in his fiction and became a pioneer of the subgenre of hard science fiction. He was an American science-fiction author, aeronautical engineer, and Naval officer, creating 32 published novels, 59 short stories, and 16 collections during his life. Four films, two television series, several episodes of a radio series, and a board game have been derived directly from his work. Heinlein edited an anthology of other writers' Science Fiction short stories.

WWII, the atomic bombings in Japan, and the Cold War galvanized Heinlein's determination to make a difference with his writing. He published four influential short stories for The Saturday Evening Post magazine, including The Green Hills of Earth, which made him the first science fiction writer to break out of the "pulp ghetto." In 1950, the movie Destination Moon—the documentary-like film for which he had written the story and scenario, co-written the script, and invented many of the effects—won an Academy Award for special effects. Understanding that the YA market devoured fantasy and sci-fi, he embarked on a series of juvenile novels for the Charles Scribner's Sons publishing company that went from 1947 through 1959, at the rate of one book each autumn, in time for Christmas presents to teenagers.

Books of note: Stranger in a Strange Land, The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress, Starship Troopers

Dom Testa’s Book Club Pick

By Charles Duhigg, it was originally published in 2012 and has earned over 37,000 ratings on Amazon.

It’s not unusual for people to pick up self-help books at the beginning of a year, anxious to begin some new routines to get their life on track.

Well, why wait for January? Here’s the kind of book that can help you right now.

Charles Duhigg, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who once worked for The New York Times, researched the fascinating world of habits. He found the science behind the way we do things and wrote a terrific book that has helped to change the lives of thousands of people.

Basically, the idea is to achieve success in life by examining the patterns that shape our lives. One little change here and another there can often be the starting point that alters your future for the better.

I’m not a fan of traditional “self-help” books, which often seem like mindless cheerleading to me. But this book taps into the science that I enjoy so much and makes it much more accessible, I think, for people to actually embrace.

Looking to make some changes in your life?

This could be the catalyst.

Dom Testa does short and insightful reviews – both fiction and nonfiction. You can find them on his website, www.DomTesta.com

Meet the Hall’s Board

The Hall is honored to have a breadth of dedication and support from men and women who are supportive of the power of the written word and Hall’s mission. You can find information about each on Hall’s website HERE:

Barb Winter

I retired from the corporate and business world four years ago, serving in executive roles in the energy and financial sectors. I have always had a passion for community outreach and have served on numerous boards throughout my professional life, as well as in these new retirement years. I am always inquisitive and willing to learn new things. I pledged to myself to find some new ventures to support that I didn’t know a lot about, and, voilà, along comes the opportunity to join this insightful, fun, and educational group.

I am not a writer or creative by background or nature, other than innumerable papers, reports, and business writings in my career – and the occasional helping my daughter with schoolwork and reports! I am an avid reader and now have the time to expand my pleasure by reading all the books I’ve accumulated and received.

I had the pleasure of meeting a few authors like Margaret Atwood, Erik Larson, and others when they visited Colorado Springs for events and readings. So, I’m especially excited about opportunities to meet many others. These kinds of opportunities really are inspirational. I am almost a Colorado native, having lived here since I was two after coming to the United States as a newly adopted child from Japan.

I also have a passion for mentoring young adults and have worked with several students through university programs and other settings. I’m pleased that our organization offered the “Aspiring Author Scholarships” last year to five individuals to further the careers of many new prospective authors of all ages.

Support the Hall

The Colorado Authors' Hall of Fame celebrates the accomplishments of living and past authors connected to Colorado—their words, wisdom, accomplishments, and the life-changing impact their works create. The result: their legacy lives on.

The Hall is an all-volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that honors and celebrates authors connected with Colorado by birth; by residence; by temporary residency for writing encouragement and support; by writing about elements within Colorado; or by placing storylines in or about Colorado.

Authors’ words have immense power and impact on others’ lives. They solve problems, bring awareness to a topic, and provide hours of pleasurable reading. It’s the power of their words.

Your financial assistance through donations and participation at events supports the bi-annual Induction Gala in odd-numbered years, the Aspiring Author Scholarships, and the general operation to bring these events to the public.

Support the Hall for this year and in the future.
