This Week Under The Book Shepherd’s Roof
Hello and Good Publishing Day to YOU …
Huge kudos to Jeanene “JC” Childers … what a way to say hello to her 90th birthday popping up. As a member of the “Silent Generation”, JC is never silent. The first day of her Amazon Bestseller run, she claimed TEN #1 spots … and maintened them for three solid days. Our next class starts on July 7th
I’ve decided to do “split” Salons forward, starting in July. Early AM will be on the ONLINE/REMOTE ZOOM AuthorYOU members from 7 am Mountain to 8.45 am. IN-PERSON will be in my home from 9 am Mountain to 11 am with flow over possibilities.

You do need to register on the Meetup site for each.

My veggies are basking in the sun. It’s been hot. Tomatoes teasing with red juicy bites to come; the squashes are forming for the first round; the snow peas and green beans stretching up wires; and melons are promising some growth. Fingers crossed. All the hanging flower baskets are doing their thing and the wild flower seeds I tossed around are showing promise. Meanwhile—major outdoor projects are in the works. A 90 foot plus curving three foot wide pathway with New Mexico flagstone weaving its way from the top of my driveway to the base of our property in the back. Will be so glad to break up the gazillions of river rock that has been planted in the 25 feet span from the street to the back of our adjacent properties between my neighbor’s and my home. Then—maybe, just maybe—the HOA will approve the paint color for the exterior I’ve selected. It’s not a “normal” color in the menu of homeowner choices.—I’m pushing it. Doesn’t a French Roast color sound delicious with a cream trim versus boring beige?
We are still working on the morphing of The Book Shepherd website. New colors. New layout. New banner in play. With over 200 pages to move … it’s a big freaking deal! This is what the new banner will look like, deigned by Rebecca Finkel:
I’m up to my eyeballs in getting ready for Speaking Unplugged this weekend. The workbook is ready and I look forward to seeing our attendees. The Authors’ Tea is up on the Book Shepherd website … slated for Saturday October 30. Plus … Barnes and Noble in Colorado store located in Glendale will be hosting FOUR Book Fairs for the Author community… two on July 17-18 and two on August 21-22—dates are Saturdays and Sundays. If you buy anything in the store using our special coupon, it will donate to the Authors Hall of Fame. Past BookFairs underwrote the creation of the website for the Hall. You must reach out to me to be considered as a featured author. A percentage of sales will be donated to the Colorado Authors’ Hall of Fame Induction slated for September 18th. This week is the LAST time to claim a spot—let me know if you are interested. Details below.

And, I’m sticking my neck out and building the calendar through the end of the year. Summer BBQ -August 7th, Author Tea is on it - October 30th, Holiday Celebration-December 4th. Plus more. For all live and in-person events—the rule is you have been vaccinated.

And... watch for announcements about the Colorado Authors’ Hall of Fame. After mega hours with the Nominating Committee members since mid-March, the list was narrowed down and the 2021 Inductees identified. We are enormously excited … I think you will be when they are formally announced, too. Put September 18th on your calendars.

That’s my week … how’s yours? And, please share your news with me so I can shout it out as well.

Have you ever explored the network website where I store all my podcasts? Holy Moly … over 7 million downloads of various podcasts already. Fun watching the download numbers—something that I look at each morning with my hot mug of tea.
Last week, it was all about I explored the WHO, WHAT, and WHY of creating a Crowdfunding program. This week is all about blogging power.

You can select which podcast is for you from over 350 shows and 7,000,000 total downloads since the show started … the latest will always be posted on top of the show page: http://bit.ly/BookPublishingPodcast it goes directly to the Show Page, where you can view all podcasts at once—just scroll … you’ve got a lot to pick from to expand your learning and how to curve.

AuthorYOU First Saturday program …
LAST week to CLAIM a SPOT
BookFairs Are Coming in July and August

Get out your calendar and mark these dates:
Saturday and Sunday,

July 17-18 and August 21-22 ...

It's a biggie for many members of the AuthorYOU community. Why?
Once again, many will be featured at the biggest Barnes & Noble store in Colorado. AuthorYOU and Barnes & Noble have created an AuthorYOU day for their members. Metro Denver book lovers who want to meet, greet and support local authors and bookstores and book-buying will be in the store. It’s a Colorado Authors Hall of Fame support event two weekends in July and August ... both Saturday and Sunday ... at the Colorado Blvd. Barnes & Noble bookstore at 960 Colorado Blvd. in Glendale, Colorado.

Author signings from morning to evening. There will be two tables for signings—two authors at each table and signing times will be 120 minutes each over the weekend.

This is a free event ... but you have to qualify. Will you be one of the featured and promoted authors? If you have questions about the event or would like to be a "featured author", please contact Judith pronto at Judith@Briles.com.

Put in the subject line: pick me for Book Fair.

What say you? Do you want to support a bookstore that supports authors and the community ... and support the Colorado Authors' Hall of Fame Induction celebration ... an event that Denver's Mayor Hancock has already proclaimed September 18th as Authors' Hall of Fame Induction Celebration Day?

Questions of the Week:

Question: What is the common size of a book printed today?

Answer: That has several answers. Trade paperbacks: Most fiction and general nonfiction books range from 5 x 8 and 5.5 x 5.85. Some are at 6 x 9—usually major authors via traditional publishing. BUT, there are a variety of sizes that will work for you. For gift books, think small. From the 4 x 6 to 5 x 7. The 5 x 7 works for how-to, self-help and books that seem either personal or in the business genre that are fast reads and easily portable.

For childrens’—square books are popular—at least 8 x 8 and 8 .5 x 11. Most printers for offset and customized digital can do a huge range of sizes.
Here’s another BUT … if there is any chance you are going to do a POD version—check immediately with Amazon’s KDP and IngramSpark for what sizes they will print. Otherwise, you may have to lay your book out again.

You can pick my brain … minimum time is 30 minutes. If you need one-on-one-time with me, I’m always open for a few minutes to give you some quick input. But, and it’s a BIG BUT, many call and expect far more than a few minutes.

This is called a “consult” and I would be delighted to schedule time with you for “just you and your many questions” that need answers. You can book time with me it at: http://bit.ly/JudithCoaching

Author Friendly Friday this week …

Join Author Friendly Fridays: a fun, sharing and a dynamic closed group. You can join in the next week. It’s a full hour when you can ask questions—any question. And, I always include a few strategies to get your authoring life ahead of the competition.

It’s for paid subscribers ONLY and we do it on Zoom.

This is how each call starts: I share a few strategies, tips and tools that attendees can immediately start to use. All share … and ask plenty of questions. They get answers. Definitely an excellent way to start a Friday. Those of you who aren’t participating, you are making a mistake. I love the variety of books and authors who have chosen to participate. What’s also fun, is the energy that can be felt with what everyone is working on. Love it!
