This Week Under The Book Shepherd’s Roof

Hello and Good Publishing Day to YOU …
How can it already be the last week of the month? I have no idea where June went to … how about you? This past week always delivers one of my favorite days—Summer Solstice. Often, I have a gathering of friends to celebrate summer and friendship with a dinner on the deck. This year, I’m immobile and housebound for two solid months … so I’ve already calendared it for 2021.
Why the housebound and immobile? Well, it’s an ankle kind of thing. A fluke kind of twist and mine came tumbling down—breaks, displacements and a multi-hour surgery, plates, lots of screws, and another surgery slated in three months—no weight on my left leg period and it must be up most of the time … but it is what it is. Thanks to Ron Beach and Bobby Crew for creating a temp office on the main floor in my home library so I can continue podcasting and working with clients. And, I’ve aced the knee scooter and balance is building as I master the one-legged thing for moving about when I need to be up.

From my chosen view within the house, I start my mornings once up and settle in for several hours. I have a seven windows view. My neighbor’s roof showcases Iggy and Ziggy—the names I’ve given to the two squirrels that race up and down and across their roof each morning. As I scan the windows, hummingbirds come into play and my personal favs, the yellow and red finches that we have three feeders set for. To the side, I might spy a bushy tail dropping down an aspen. The light filtering through the trees always thrills me, bringing a sense of calm for the day.

Last Saturday was a huge day for me—I figured out how to get on the outside deck and just enjoy the summer temps and climates—plugins for computers, recharging phone, and alternating my peach iced tea with protein infusion drinks that my daughter has loaded me up on.
My neighbor Linda arrived with replacement impatient plants for several of my deck pots –sheepie guy from Mara Purl was the first to be repotted—love it!
I do miss being able to cook for us and friends … but it too, will pass. John’s skills are on the low end in this department.

When in the immobile state, a new webinar last week on workbooks was delivered … and I started thinking, then planning. And though I thought my next book would be the 90 Minute Solution … it’s been bumped … I’m going to create a deep dive workbook for Book Marketing—pulling from my Book Marketing Unplugged and all-new material. If authors can just get the marketing DNA infused (and dear reader … you can and you must), it will change your book life. Working title is Book Marketing Power and POP.

Sooooooo … this past week was a cross between very “quiet” … not bouncing around to a variety of events, activities, projects that usually consume my time and working on “recovering” and starting the “healing” process from the unexpected surgery. My daughter Shelley is my wheels—it takes a team to get me in a car and to medical appointments … but it will get better.

Thank you to so many for your well wishes, prayers and catch up phone calls. Broken ankles are not fun—trust me here. Celebrating that I can get up, get to the bathroom, washed up, dressed, give myself my daily anti-blood-clotting in the belly injection, maneuvering the knee scooter to the kitchen to brew a mug of tea, maneuvering the scooter, remembering that I can’t put my foot down and settling in with swollen leg up for the day in 45 minutes was my early am kickoff. And, I picked up a craving for tapioca and chicken salad with crunched Fritos and then on Father’s Day, the kids brought over KFC—yum … who knew?!

Onward …

Questions of the Week:

Question: How long does it take to publish a book?

Answer: Is your manuscript completed and ready for editing? If yes, the answer will depend on the type of editing that you need. If it’s heavy/content editing, it may take six months with a solid one or two months in the editing space. Once a book can go to layout, completion of cover design, then one more proof or “cold eye” edit, you will be ready for print.

Typically, if your manuscript doesn’t need heavy editing, I would plan three months. If heavy re-writes are called for you could be looking at six … or more, depending on your editor’s schedule and your response time. And depending on print format, whether POD or printing digitally or offset, you would be looking at two to six weeks, in addition,to have books in your hands.
