This Week Under The Book Shepherd’s Roof

Hello and Good Publishing Day to YOU …

Saturday’s Virtual AuthorYOU Salons was fun, informative, and kick butt. Participants came with their questions … they left with their answers. Easy Peasy. Loved it that we marched through each participants’ websites—with comments about fixes and changes. Interaction to the max!

After horrendous weeks the previous week in Colorado, we shifted to a little heat. High 80s and low 90s were the norms… and the fire warnings are out. Buzz is that all fireworks will be banned for the 4th of July this year. Our neighboring state of Wyoming is a resource where many make the trek to create the neighborhood bash. Will they this year?

This week was one of paying my real estate taxes—quite a ding in the checking account—and having more unscheduled appointments due to the ankle reconstruction surgery I had yesterday generated from a flip flop that had a mind of its own. Four hours later, let’s hope that my ankle is as good as need with its new hardware. Time will tell. Meanwhile, kudos to the many of my neighbors who have ponied up to help with all the extra watering of plants during the summer season … and to many of you who just did a drop in to help. Thank you to them, thank you to you … and to many of you who called, emailed, and wished speedy healing.

Tis always a pain when these unexpected events land in our lives. I’ve had enough for this year.

Looking forward to the new webinar on creating workbooks TOMORROW. I encourage all of you to tap into this additional resource to repurpose your expertise into an additional product. Details below.

Love the clematis showing their glory early this morning.

Questions of the Week:

Question: How can children’s authors who are NOT illustrators find and afford quality illustrations for their books?

Answer: You can start with asking other children’s authors who they used (and ask who they didn’t as well). You can check with the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators and ChildrensIllustrators.com. There are links to online portfolio directories that you can browse by style, medium, topic, and even region. You can go to online resources, such as Fiverr.com and browse a variety of portfolios. I’ve used DonSidle.net for many of my author’s books. You can check with Art Schools—many of their students would love to add “published illustrator” to their resumes.

Costs will vary. Some change by the illustration; others by the project. Illustrators think in pictures. You need to supply the words that will generate them. Always get samples—most will do one to see if his or her style is a fit for you. And my advice—this is where you should use your credit card.
