This Week Under The Book Shepherd’s Roof

Hello and Good Publishing Day to YOU …

This week is a crowning week for me—as in getting my first—oh my. This afternoon is a close encounter with my dentist and a numbed up mouth. And, my new bulbs that were planted last October are starting to say hello.

Last weekends all day mini-Extravaganza was a hit for all—plus it was a stellar day outside—so nice that we all ate lunch in the outdoor patio loving the 70 degree weather. Kudos to Nick Zelinger, Julie Bernard, Richard Rieman, Rebecca Finkel, Ron Beach and Pat Comiskey for sharing their sage wisdom. Since the day was so nice, we voted to end an hour early so all could enjoy the outdoors. The final session that I was slated to deliver will be done in a special webinar for just those registered: the Business of Publishing with all the how forms and organizing tips.
And today, I will be setting up two new webinars. One dedicated to the attendees who were at Saturday’s event and one on creating Deck Cards to augment your book, your expertise, maybe a project that is a gleam in your eyes.

AND, we will make a decision on whether to postpone my Speaking Unplugged until June due to the nasty bug that has affected many events this week. Either way, I’ll get an announcement out to all no later than Friday.

Details HERE: http://bit.ly/Unplugged-Speaking. Treat yourself ... Come … it’s fun and lots of take-aways. Savvy attendees have learned that it’s smart to stay on-site at the hotel. The site is the Embassy Suites DTC North. We usually gather for a let our hair down dinner and bonus time together Friday night. Alumni participants of previous Unpluggeds always get a deep discount. If this is postponed to June 26-27 (back up date), all attendees will be "rolled" over to it.

Have you ever explored the network website where I store all my podcasts? Over 100,000 authors download episodes every month! Here’s a new link to the AuthorU-Your Guide to Book Publishing podcast SHOW page. Tomorrow is a focus on finding and working with a literary agent—Sandra Bond joins me for a fast hour: discover the "insider’s" quick trick of finding a "like genre" agent to query; why you never "bulk" query an agent; why you should always start with an email. You can select which podcast is for you from over 300 shows … the latest will always be posted on top: http://bit.ly/BookPublishingPodcast

Add these to your calendar now. Details will all be posted under the Events tab on the website.

Questions of the Week:

Question: How do I figure out what taxes I pay on book sales?

Answer: Start with an online search—what is your state tax? (if any)—that’s one percentage; then check with the county (if you live in one)—is there a county tax for retail sales? Then, verify with the city (if you live in one) if there is an additional tax. Add them up. Where I live in Colorado—I have two that I file/pay for: my state and city that are noted on a quarterly basis. Sometimes, the filing has "0" –my sales are dependent upon when I’m speaking—otherwise they are from other bookstores who handle all reportings, including Amazon.
