This Week Under The Book Shepherd’s Roof:

Hello and Good Publishing Day to YOU.

What the heck—temps dipped to below 30 degrees and the white stuff reappeared on Tuesday. Burrrr! Yet, nothing would hold me back from finding seat C12 at my local theater and loving it and my three-hour date with movieland. I, too, along with millions of other movie lovers spent three hours with Avengers: End Game throughout the week. Both John and I loved it. A Marvel Comics reader and fan since the age of seven, I devoured each new edition for years. Of course, I would be at the movies this week for the film date of the year (that is until Star Wars pops in December)!

Typically, I tape my podcasts a month ahead. One of them (it airs May 16) is with C J McDaniels, the creator of the MockUPShots that we did a webinar within March that was a huge hit. The podcast delivered another home run—all about the creation of products. The "product" I wanted him to focus on was on opt-ins and freebies to offer from your website. Don’t miss it. And, if you missed the awesome deal he offered to all authors to create huge inventory images of your book (or for that matter, anything you want to drop in), GRAB the MockupShots tool to support you going forward via the link HERE.

Once again, I was back in the studio with the Audiobook Wizard Richard Rieman voicing my latest book to be published next month. So much has changed in the audiobook world? Are you in it? And if not, why not? Audiobook listenership is soaring and is expected to exceed ebooks within two years.

Are you new to publishing? This week’s (and next week’s) podcasts are dedicated to the newbie author. And, it never hurts to have a review of essentials in the publishing journey. Listen in.

Only 10 spots left for Book Publishing Unplugged! Want to morph your author and book life. Join me in June for two fun and deep-diving days at my annual Book Publishing Unplugged event. The dates are June 21-22. The Hotel is the Hilton Inverness (nice!). June is delightful in Denver and our classroom overlook a small pond and golf course. Perfecto for learning, a bit of escape and spending two days with me. Space is limited. Early bird rates are on—always new info—come! Join me. Details on website

Just two weeks left to nominate authors for Hall of Fame. Who’s on your list? Don’t forget … it’s the Colorado Author Hall of Fame nominating time. What author(s) have made an impact on your life? What author(s) have been trailblazers in publishing? Have you explored the Colorado Authors’ Hall of Fame? The website is official and live. You all got an eblast on it. We are now posting social media. Blogs are being added. AND go to the site, click on the Nominate tab and NOMINATE an author—living or passed—who has a body of work that has made its mark on readers, on society, on the workplace. Words are powerful. They expand imaginations. They take you places you never thought you would go. They give answers. They make you laugh. Yes, they are powerful.

And, how was your week and what are you planning as you go forward?

Questions of the Week:

Question: I’ve received a notice from a publishing company that my late husband’s book is ready to publish. All I need to do is sign the contract and send the money in. Should I do this?

Answer: My gut says NOOOOOOOO. You may be the target of a scam—it’s not uncommon for predators (and there are plenty of publishing ones out there) to look at the obituaries and claim that the deceased contracted for XYZ. You can ignore it; or send a letter stating that you are not interested. If there is a "push" back, demand that copies of all communications be sent to you within five days for your attorney to review. At the same time. Take the name of the company and begin a Google search using the words: rip-off, scam, con, lawsuit, complaints, problems after it. See what pops up and make sure you peruse multiple pages of the search, not just the first one. If the communication comes from anything connected with Author House, Author Solutions, any of its partners and subsidiaries, avoid them. If in doubt, call me. Publishing predators are dangerous.
