This Week Under The Book Shepherd’s Roof:
Whew! What a week. The decorating is done; a fabulous author party was held on Saturday night (wonderful live music (my treat to all and a surprise), the food was delicious and the dessert—oh the sensational Yule Log was out of this Santa world!
Finally, the lights are up outside; brunch with the family on Sunday and then my foodie group here for dinner Sunday. Entertaining is done until Friday when I have my street in for a potluck social—just plain, old-fashioned smoozing. And the season is off and flowing … ready to get back to "work" work.
Last week, my solo pair of glasses did a "snap". On my list for mega months was to get a second pair and I literally carried around a prescription with me. Jeeze. OK—I need them for driving and movie watching. What to do. Rebecca Finkel and hubby Olve to my rescue. Olve drilled in tiny holes; Rebecca got needle and thread and woot—I have new designer glasses until my new ones come in!

At least that's what the AuthorYOU community is declaring, and at our January 5th meeting, you'll learn how to market your books through events and awards. We will show you how to create an event that venues will welcome and buzz about and probe into the book award world.

Our Author and Publishing First Saturday will cover two key areas:

1. Book Awards what to know; which ones to go for; when to pay; what to do when you are a winner.

2. Creating non-bookstore events
get ready for ideas galore—from galleries to restaurants to retail stores … yup, even Costco and Sams.

You want to be there— for newbie authors and multi-published ones. It’s a celebration of you and your words. And what to do forward.

Your Presenters are Mara Purl and Judith Briles. Between the two of them, they’ve earned over 50 book awards, published over 45 books, sold over 1,000,000 copies and have created countless celebrations. Get ready for ideas and fun!

When: 9:00 AM to Noon with a special hour from Noon to 1:00 PM for Rounds with the Pros. You'll be able to meet with publishing experts, network, and get answers to any publishing related questions you may have.

Do you need an Introduction?
Have you ever been at a conference or a presentation and the person introducing the "Speaker" is awkward or stumbles over the pronunciation of the speaker’s name? Even what you think is a simple name?

The reality is it happens often. If you read my May post in The Book Designer, Why Authors Should Be Speaking on Their Books … Their Expertise, I shared five solid reasons why you should be included in the mix.

Part of any speaking gig is to be introduced. It’s the "set up" to you and your message. Wouldn’t you like it to be perfect and not have your name, title or whatever screwed from the opening of your talk? Yes, the introduction is the "opening" of any presentation.

Yet, it often doesn’t happen. Having delivered over 1,000 presentations, I’ve heard my name botched, the title of my presentation misstated or blatantly wrong, and at times, nothing like I emailed or snail mailed to the meeting planner. Of course, I smile on the outside and cringe on the inside.

Is there a failsafe way to prevent a delivery snafu? Not always. Can you reduce the occurrence? Definitely.

Meet the Author YOU Community … let’s hear about you!
Each week, let’s meet members of Author YOU… here’s what I want you to do. Send me info on you (approximately 70 words—who you are, expert in …, a tidbit about what you do, connection to your website, a photo of you). Send it to me at Judith@briles.com AND put in subject line member: info for ezine.
That’s it.

More Great Tools

It’s time to do an overview of your Plug Ins for your website…

If you have the All in One SEO—start there … then add the Boken Line Checker (you will be surprised how many links are broken!); Updraft Plus and the Akismet Anti-Spam (stops lots!) … you want to check your site for SEO, responsiveness and make sure you have a Privacy Policy and GDPR posted—

here’s a free tool to use: https://www.weebly.com/tools/privacy-policy

NEW WEBINAR REPLAY TIME!
November 14 -- this is the webinar you do not want to miss—no slides, just a deep dive through Karen Liz Albert’s desktop into the platforms of Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram. I guarantee you will learn things that you didn’t know exist!
Get READY for the 30 Day Social Media Facelift for Authors … a Facelift you wished you had had long ago
Rarely can I say … a webinar is an Author Strategy Game Changer. Last month, I showed you one on how to goose your PowerPoint slides to stellar display.
The Author 30-Day Social Media Facelift now joins the ranks of must watch and do.

What made it different? In a total of 70 minutes,

1.   We only deep dove into three platforms: Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram;

2.   Secret Sauce was delivered for each that will put what you are currently doing to position and grow your following to dust;

3.   There were NO SLIDES – it was ALL LIVE – and via Karen Liz Albert’s laptop to her sites showing you what to do; what to click on; what to change …

4.   Oh, you can "listen" to 95% of webinars … this was one that you were glued to what was unfolding on your screen.

Yup, a true Game Changer. For influencing. For Marketing. For Author Success.

Here’s the replay: https://vimeo.com/300915079
Here is Karen’s offer:  www.30DaySocialMediaFacelift.com

Savvy authors shouldn’t miss this one:
I speak on stages lots; I do online presentations …, and I use PowerPoint slides … always. My slides are good … NOW, they are going to be GREAT! And I’m now in the process of changing them all. Why? Because of the webinar presented on Wednesday … and I would suggest you join me.

First, here’s the replay that runs a total of 80 minutes including questions:

Next … Get ready for ALL TREATS … and NO TRICKS with Graphics Secrets to Create Eye-Popping PowerPoint Slides in LESS than One-Minute!

· If you are a speaker or speaker-to-be … you need to watch and learn.
· If you are educating your audience and plan on using visuals … you need to watch and learn.
·  If you are doing any type of interaction that uses slides and PowerPoint, you need to watch and learn.

There is a reason why my presenter, Dr. Jaclyn Kostner is paid the big bucks for all her online and remote presentations (I’m talking 4 and 5 figures for her presentations): she knows how to keep her participants and audiences visually engaged from the get-go. Now, so will you.

Questions of the Week:

Question: When do I apply for a Library of Congress Number?

Answer: First, the app will ID the PCCN / LCCN – Preassigned Library of Congress Control Number—is applied for BEFORE your book is published. It is a two-step process … meaning you apply to apply. Pass the first hurdle (meaning you put in all your info showing you are a publisher—do not state you are self-publishing—and then formally submit. The first response comes back via email (many stop here thinking they are done—nope)–watch for it—and then you formally apply. Your number will come back within a few days. I suggest you create a folder on your computer and do the copy/paste and keep all info during the process.

Book Shepherd "Fun" or an "Uh-Oh" of the Week
Love it when I find a fun shorty—a quick smile, a laugh out loud, a sip of tea … and back to work—perfect. Pooches … such a kick when the dog is guilty!

http://bit.ly/2RByclk

Join me on MONDAYS at Noon Mountain Time for Facebook Live with Live at Noon with Judith Briles – The Book Shepherd. For me, it’s a shorty—always less than 30 minutes. Grab an early lunch (or a late one) and get the latest in publishing tips, author strategies, and book marketing goosing ideas. Most times, it will be just me. Sometimes, I will have a guest—someone within my team of publishing pros that I work with and refer my clients to.

Here's how to join in: you will find it on the Judith Briles - Publishing with The Book Shepherd group or on my Time Line—I never know where it will land. If it’s within the Publishing with The Book Shepherd group ... it's a "closed group" meaning that you have to join it to participate.

JOIN here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/BookPublishingHelp/.
I’ll post an announcement on various Facebook pages in the early AM and then again 30 minutes before we start.

You can pick my brain … minimum time is 30 minutes. If you need one-on-one-time with me, I’m always open for a few minutes to give you some quick input. But, and it’s a BIG BUT, many call and expect far more than a few minutes.

This is called a "consult" and I would be delighted to schedule time with you for "just you and your many questions" that need answers. You can book time with me it at: https://thebookshepherd.com/pick-judiths-brain

Author Friendly Friday this week …

Join Author Friendly Fridays: a fun, sharing and a dynamic closed group. You can join in the next week. It’s a full hour when you can ask questions—any question. And, I always include a few strategies to get your authoring life ahead of the competition.

It’s for paid subscribers ONLY and we do it on Skype.

This is how each call starts: I share a few strategies, tips and tools that attendees can immediately start to use. All share … and ask plenty of questions. They get answers. Definitely an excellent way to start a Friday. Those of you who aren’t participating, you are making a mistake. I love the variety of books and authors who have chosen to participate. What’s also fun, is the energy that can be felt with what everyone is working on. Love it!
